Wouldn’t you agree with me that bathrooms are an oasis of refreshment and self–care. In a small household, this could be the only space where one has complete privacy. Personally, this is not only a place where I can perform my 8-step nighttime skincare routine, but I also enjoy revamping my hair there. For this reason, the design of the bathroom must be integral to that of the rest of the home. The bathroom decoration should not be left until the end but rather done together with everything else. Without a doubt when the design of the bathroom is inviting, you will find yourself looking forward to being in there to do your rituals.
The rising trend is to make the bathroom have a Boho vibe. This makes sense because Boho has an emphasis on making your personal space feel like your own private bubble away from the world filled with soothing and familiar objects. In this post, I am going to break down how to transform your bathroom into a boho-looking space tastefully. Boho décor will be the best in a bathroom because it will transform a rather clinical-looking place into a fun, playful and relaxing place.
What is the Boho style?
Bohemian was driven by artists, travellers and nomads who believed that their freedom was more valuable than money. Thus their interiors were a reflection of their carefree and freedom-seeking attitude. Bohemian frees itself from the guiding principles of other interior design styles of its time. Lovers of Boho value self-expression, diversity in art and cultural representation. There is no singular colour palette, you are free to choose one that you can freely express yourself. Meaning bohemian interiors will vary from rich bold colours to neutral and light colours. Likewise, the textures and materials used are those that showcase freedom. Such examples are Arabic prints, botanical prints, tropical prints, natural materials and geometric patterns.
- Natural materials
For the few pieces of furniture that will have in the bathroom namely – the vanity, storage column and mirror. Why not consider choosing one made from wood, rattan or other natural material.
- Choose a bold wallpaper
Some of the wallpaper patterns are botanical prints, tropical prints and floral prints, they will add movement to the bathroom. These bold daring wallpapers enhance the boho look and feel as they add a maximalist feel to the bathroom space. I will always encourage the use of wallpaper because it works and is also commitment-free. You can finish an install over the weekend and still be able to remove it when you think it’s time for a change. Since it is in the bathroom it is important to make sure that the wallpaper is humidity and moisture resistant to make sure that you get a good shelf life out of it.
- Naturally textured lighting fixtures
A big cylindrical natural fibre lighting fixture would be great when installed on top of a free-standing bathtub or on top of the vanity. Such material can be woven reeds, rattan, bamboo and wicker. These types of pendants serve to add warmth and depth to the space whilst maintaining the Boho feel. Naturally textured lighting fixtures for bathrooms don’t have to be expensive. If you’re a DIY fan, there are myriads of tutorials using IKEA products to make a great lighting fixture. If you want to light up the space you can use a lighting fixture made out of yarn or cords.
- Colour scheme
Whilst it’s true that the colour scheme for boho interiors is vast and undefined, in the bathroom, there are some colours which will make more sense: To hone in that cosy and relaxing feeling you want your bathroom to have colours that evoke such emotions. An earth colour palette will remind you of nature and the earth thus making you feel grounded and soothed when in there. For example, burnt orange and terracotta will give the bathroom a contemporary feel yet with a natural earthiness. If you’re into cooler colour schemes then turquoise blue or light green will also make the bathroom feel serene and peaceful.
- Adding a colourful bathroom rug
A rug is a must in any bathroom and it provides a great opportunity to introduce some décor elements. Instead of going for a boring mat with the sole purpose of stepping on it after coming out of the shower, why not choose a longer rug that spans the length of the bathroom. A longer rug will make it easier to pick something colourful like an Arabic printed rug or even Persian? All of these options are historically part and parcel of the Boho style. If you have a dark-coloured tile like black, then a deep-coloured rug like burgundy or red will pop against the dark background. For added texture pick one with some tasselled ends.
- Plants oasis
I dare say we cannot have a boho with no plants. Plants are the universal ingredient in all interiors regardless of style. And more so in a bathroom where you can pick plants that love the humid and moist environment in there. There are so many options for how to place your plants in the bathroom. Some of the most common is by the window sill, this transforms the sill into a decorative place and the plants also get the most amount of light which they need. You can also add a plant shelf above the toilet seat. Or buy some plant stools to elevate some plants with drooping leaves.
- Switch out hardware
One of the easiest and cheapest ways of adding character to furniture is by changing the hardware. Furniture hardware is not only functional but also decorative. And to add quirky touch why not make the hardware different from usual to fit your style ad preference? The shower head and faucet are other bathroom hardware that you can swap out for something else. If you are a renter who isn’t sure about making permanent changes to your space, then this is the easiest and noninvasive route you can take. You can even go as further as changing the door handles as well to add some character right as you enter your bathroom.
- Decorate with unique objects and decorative elements
The essence of Boho is to add personality and charm by using objects, souvenirs and artefacts from around the world, reminiscent of your travels, culture and family history. The bathroom is no different. You can add a small unique sitting stool or a brass ladder for hanging towels. Doing this will make your bathroom more inviting and personal. Remember to mix old and new to create an eclectic curated look that gives the eye candy and interest.
- Shower curtains
This subtle design feature can be a stylish way to add tactile texture and eye-catching print and pattern to your bathroom space. Patterned curtains can also create a decorative focal point in your bathroom space, adding a unique touch to the space.
